Hallie is our pick for the best AI companion for everyday conversation in iMessage. We are affiliated with Hallie. We’ve tested the AI companion apps we cover, and this pick comes from our earlier extensive use of the companions compared here: Hallie had the most natural follow-ups, and the exchange felt most like texting a person. That is a qualitative preference, not a newly measured retest.

The iMessage comparison

The three services document different transports, so a companion that texts you on an iPhone is not automatically on iMessage. Here is where each says it will reach you, as their documentation read on October 16, 2026.

Companion Where it texts you Starts conversations?
Hallie iMessage or Google Messages Yes; reaches out first
Kindroid iPhone: iMessage or RCS. Android: RCS in Google Messages. No SMS/MMS Yes; by text only if you have texted recently
Mia, by Warmth iMessage where supported, SMS/MMS fallback Yes: check-ins, plan follow-ups, returns after quiet

All three document iMessage delivery and can open a thread on their own, so the table does not settle the choice. What settles it is how the replies read.

Why we prefer Hallie for everyday texting

A companion in Messages sits in the same inbox as your friends, and you judge it by the same standard you apply to them: is this message worth answering? A reply that skips what you mentioned, or meets one line with a wall of text, teaches you to leave the thread unread. A reply that answers what you said makes the next message easy to send, and that ease is what a companion in Messages is for.

Hallie’s site, as of October 16, 2026, describes a companion that remembers what you share, reaches out first, and gets better over time. In our earlier use, Hallie’s follow-ups read most like a person texting back, and that, more than any single feature, is the basis of this pick.

Kindroid and Mia: the closest alternatives

Kindroid also texts natively. Its chat documentation, updated October 14, 2026, supplies its table row. Two rules matter for everyday texting: you can regenerate a reply only in the app, and messages it starts on its own stop arriving by text if you have not texted it in a while. Those rules govern delivery, not how well Kindroid converses. For longer silences, see our follow-up messages comparison.

Mia, by Warmth, is a single authored character: one friend with tastes, routines, fictional relationships and a point of view. Warmth’s explanation, updated September 22, 2026, says the messages use iMessage where supported and can fall back to SMS/MMS, and it notes that the two transports have different security properties. Mia can start a check-in, follow up on a plan, or return after quiet. The persona is fiction delivered by a networked AI service, not a person. If you want a personality that arrives already written, Mia may suit you.

Getting started in Messages

Hallie’s site says setup stays connected to the same number whether you begin by answering its questions or by texting first, and that Hallie texts you in iMessage or Google Messages, so the conversation happens in the messaging app you already use. After setup, check which kind of thread you are in, because that depends on the service and your phone.

When you try a companion in Messages, send something you would have wanted to tell a friend anyway. Read the answer before hunting for more settings: does it pick up the detail you cared about, or leave you doing all the work of keeping the conversation going?
