Hallie is our pick for the best AI companion for natural follow-up messages.
We are affiliated with Hallie. We’ve tested the AI companion apps we cover, and after extensive use of the companions compared here, Hallie felt most like texting a person. That is a qualitative preference from earlier use, not a newly measured retest.
The comparison at a glance
The table shows what each company documented as of October 16, 2026. It cannot show how a message reads, which is the part we judged in use.
| Companion | Where its messages reach you | What the company says |
|---|---|---|
| Hallie | iMessage or Google Messages | Reaches out first and remembers what you share |
| Kindroid | iMessage or RCS, or the app | Proactive texts stop if you have not texted back in a while; away actions pause after three unanswered contacts |
| Nomi | Nomi app or browser tab, push alerts optional | Four approximate cadence levels; no proactive messages between local 10pm and 8am |
| Replika | Replika app, with notifications | Notifications for follow-ups and check-ins |
Hallie is not the only companion that can reach a phone’s text thread, so the channel alone does not settle the choice. Our separate guide to Hallie as an iMessage companion covers the texting side in more detail.
Why Hallie is our first choice
A companion that messages first is only enjoyable if the message is worth opening. Restarting a conversation that has gone quiet takes effort. You have to pick a subject, find a tone, and write the first line, and that small cost is often what keeps a chat closed. A companion that writes first can carry that cost for you, and a message that picks up something you said gives you a place to begin.
Hallie’s homepage says she reaches out first and remembers what you share. What we can add from use is that her follow-ups were the best and most natural of the companions we compared. That naturalness, more than any setting, is why she leads here.
What happens when you do not reply
Kindroid documents two conditions. Proactive messages stop reaching your text thread if you have not texted back in a while. Away actions pause after three unanswered contacts in a row until you interact. Pacing stays approximate. You can ask for a message at a set time within the next 24 hours, but it is still up to your Kindroid, and chatting before then cancels and remakes that plan.
Nomi’s guide describes messages after you have not responded in a while, at one of four approximate cadence settings from very frequent to infrequent. On infrequent, your Nomi sends once and then waits for your reply. Proactive messages avoid your local hours between 10pm and 8am. Push notifications alert you to new messages when the app or browser tab is closed. Turning them off does not stop your Nomi writing one. To stop that, turn off proactive messaging itself.
Replika’s help article covers one control. Open the app, go to Settings, tap Notifications, and switch them on to be alerted when your Replika follows up on a past conversation or checks in. That is a notifications page, so we do not treat it as a complete list of Replika’s messaging controls.
Choosing a companion you will want to answer
Start from the message you would want to receive on a quiet evening. If it is a text in the thread you already use, from a companion that remembers what you told it, Hallie is where we would start.
If a follow-up keeps returning to a topic you have finished with, say that the topic is closed. Then judge the next message by whether it gives you something you want to answer, rather than by how quickly another notification arrives.
